Volume 20 Number 3 November 2009

The annual Awards Day ceremony was held on 4 November. In this event, awards were presented to the students who had the highest average in the last school session (the 2008-2009 school year). Fifth grader, Cameron Schwartz, sixth grader, Schumann Chang, seventh grader Steven Sdrougias, and eighth grader, Jack Kassardjian were the Middle School recipients of these awards for their work in the last school year. Another winner was ninth grader, Anna Barnett, who was an eighth grade student in the 2008-2009 session.

Congratulations to librarian., Ann Marie Coviello for a successful book fair! All Middle School reading classes visited the book fair with their teachers as advisors. Additionally, students were able to browse the fair at their breaks and lunch. Thanks to the students for their decorations and to all the parents who volunteered.

Several Ridgewood students were chosen in the recent competition for the District VI Junior High Honor Choir. The students chosen were seventh graders, Daniela Aviles, Amanda Escobar, Katherine Hartenstein, Ashley Lindsay, Ali McConnell, and Steven Sdrougias.

Retakes of school pictures are scheduled for 8 December for any student absent for the original photographs. Students will be reminded prior to that date.

Seventh and eighth graders should be preparing their projects for the upcoming Social Studies Fair in early February. Students have been issued instructions for projects in their history classes. Fifth and sixth graders will have their own fair later in the spring. Topics for fifth and sixth grade projects should come from their history classes, as well. The students may choose any topic that has been or will be studied in the respective history class after it is approved by the teacher.

Now is the time to start planning for mid-term exams. Exams will begin on 11 January. The last exam will be on 15 January. Students will report to school at the regular time. All exams begin at 8:40. Students may leave school after the completion of their exam. Fifth and sixth grade exams may last no longer than 10:30. Seventh and eighth grade exams may last until 11:40. Students may stay at school until their regular pick-up time, but there are no organized activities, nor organized supervision. Lunch will be available. Please be certain to instruct your children as to what they are to do after exams. Exam schedules will be distributed on 5 January.

You have recently received information regarding Ridgewood’s Annual Giving Campaign. Your support makes possible a wide variety of projects. Although contributions are accepted throughout the year, they must be dated by December 31, 2009 for a 2009 tax credit. If you need an additional contribution envelope, please call the school office at 835-2545 to have one sent to you.

Parents are reminded that there is a new shipment of sweatshirts and sweatpants for sale in the bookstore. Your child may want these clothes for physical education in the colder weather. All adult sizes are still available.

As the holidays approach, please remember our troops. Several Ridgewood alumni are active members of the armed forces and are far from home..
