Volume 20 Number 4 December 2009
The Ridgewood faculty and staff wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. Holidays will begin with the 3:00 bell on 18 December. Classes will resume on 4 January 2010.

The Ridgewood Junior Library Club deserves a big “thank you” for the hard work and dedication that made the Scholastic Book Fair another incredible success. The fair’s theme was “Destination Reading,” and Middle School Library Club members made the theme come alive. They collected artifacts from foreign places and held a scavenger hunt in which the contestants were asked to find those places on a map. The winner of the scavenger hunt was fourth grader, Lane Petitt.

Ms. Meyer and the Golden Eagle band presented the annual Ione Rasmussen Holiday Concert on Thursday, 17 December. The entire band played movie themes, opera melodies, a medley entitled, “Big Band Favorites,” as well as various seasonal music, including Hanukkah and carol selections, The concert, always popular with students, pleased them once again.

Congratulations to seventh grader, Katie Hartrenstein on being selected to perform on her bass clarinet in the District VI Junior High Honor Band. Congratulations also to sixth grader, Harry Philippi who was selected to play trumpet in the Elementary Honor Band.

Seventh and eighth graders should be preparing their projects for the upcoming Social Studies Fair to be held on 12 February. Students have been issued instructions for projects in their history classes. Fifth and sixth graders will have their own fair later in the spring.

The entrance exam for new students entering Ridgewood will be administered on Saturday, 13 March 2010 If you need an application, please call the main office at 835-2545.

The Ridgewood Band can always use additional musical instruments. If you have any usable instruments that you would like to donate, please call the office at 835-2545. At this time, the band would especially like additional trumpets and other types of brass instruments.

Now is the time to make plans for mid-term exams. Exams begin on 11 January (Monday) and end on 15 January (Friday) Regular classes will not be held on those days. Students will report directly to their exam rooms at the time of the morning bell. Students in grades five and six may take until 10:30 to complete their exams. Students in grades seven and eight may take until 11:40. Students are dismissed after their exams are completed for the day. Lunch will be available if students need to purchase it. Parents should make transportation arrangements if you want your child to leave school prior to his/her normal transportation time. If your child is staying on campus please instruct him/her what you would like him/her to do (study, work in the library, etc.) There are no organized activities. Students are not allowed to bring electronic games, CD players, or similar equipment. Exam schedules will be distributed on 6 January. Six-weeks’ tests are optional on the part of the teachers.

Please remember to follow the traffic pattern of proceeding on Pasadena Avenue away from Airline Highway, toward Giuffrias Street on A Street, and on Giuffrias toward Airline Highway. This traffic pattern should be used between 8:00 to 8:30 AM and between 3:00 to 3:30 PM Traffic flow has been improved and safety increased.

Parents, please instruct your children that if they are not in an assigned carpool, they should wait for their rides at gates other than the carpool gate. Too many students standing and playing in that area make exiting difficult for the younger children waiting for their rides there.

As you enjoy your holidays, remember our service men and women far from home at this dangerous time.
Happy Holidays!
