Volume 20 Number 5 January 2010
A belated New Year’s greeting from the Ridgewood faculty and staff!

Some parents have asked for an explanation of exam grade values. When you saw your child’s report card you noticed that three additional columns had been filled. There was a grade for the third six-weeks, an exam grade, and the semester average. The third six-weeks column records the grades or the last report card period. Exam grades are a separate grade and are not computed in the six-weeks average.

Middle school exam grades are one-fourth of the semester average. There are four exceptions to the exam value. The exams of four eighth grade courses, Algebra I, Physical Science, Computer Applications, and English are computed as one-third of the semester grade because these courses earn high school credit.

If you have any questions, please call the main office and request that the pertinent teacher contact you.

Congratulations to fifth grader, Brennan Mc Connell for qualifying for the Duke Talent Search. This search is
conducted by Duke University. Its object is to identify students who have scored in the ninety-fifth percentile or better in any portion of a standardized achievement test. Fourth grader, Ben Mader also qualified.

The next six-weeks testing period will begin two days after the Mardi Gras holidays. Tests will be administered Beginning on 24 February and ending with the test on 3 March. Test schedules will be distributed on 22 February.

The Science Olympiad team is working hard to prepare for competition to be held on Saturday, 27 February.
Students compete in various events in which they must solve problems presented to them. The competition
requires ingenuity and planning. Susan Hanlon is the Middle School team coach and proctor.

from the history classes in those grades. Ribbons will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners in both grade levels. A fair will be held for fifth and sixth graders at a later date. You will receive information regarding the fifth and sixth grade fair.

Parents, please remember to use Pasadena Street away from Airline, A Street towards Giuffrias Street, and
Giuffrias Street toward Airline as one-way streets between 8:00 and 8:30 and 3:00 and 3:30 to improve traffic flow. Also, please do not park near the A Street gate at 3:00 PM.
