Volume 28                     Number 5                  January 2018

A belated New Year’s greeting from the Ridgewood faculty and staff! A new semester began on 15 January!

Some parents have asked for an explanation of exam grade values. When you saw your child’s report card you noticed that three additional columns had been filled. There was a grade for the third six-weeks, an exam grade, and the semester average. The third six-weeks column records the grades for the last report card period. Exam grades are a separate grade and are not computed in the six-weeks average.

Middle school exam grades are one-fourth of the semester average. There are four exceptions to the exam value. The exams of four eighth grade courses, Algebra I, Physical Science, English, and Keyboarding are computed as one-third of the semester grade because these courses earn high school credit.

If you have any questions, please call the main office and request that the pertinent teacher contact you.

The LMEA Solo and Ensemble Assessment will be held at Ridgewood on 7 February. In the assessment, students in grades 4-12 will perform solos, duets, trios, and more for judges who will then award comments and a rating based upon the students’ performances. Events will be scheduled throughout the day in six minute intervals. Guests are welcome to come to the band room and observe.  Ask your child for his/her event time. Those earning the Superior rating of I will receive medals in the spring.

Seventh and eighth grade students will have a display of their social studies projects in the gym on 1 March. A similar event will be held for fifth and sixth graders later in the spring.

The next six-weeks testing period will begin for the Middle School on 21 February. Tests will be administered beginning 21 February (20 February for the High School) and end with the test on 27 February. Test schedules will be distributed on 8 February.

Mardi Gras is 13 February. No classes will be held during the week of Mardi Gras. Holidays begin at the 3:00 bell on Friday, 9 February, and classes resume with the 8:25 bell on Monday, 19 February. (There will be no classes in the week 12 February- 16 February.)

Additionally, the Music department, Science department, library, and school office are always happy to receive donations of useful items.

Parents, please remember to use Pasadena Ave away from Airline, A Street towards Giuffrias Ave, and Giuffrias Ave toward Airline as one-way streets between 8:00 and 8:30 and 3:00 and 3:30 to improve traffic flow. Also, please do not park near the A Street gate at 3:00 PM. That gate is for the Primary School carpool students. If you are picking up non-carpool students, please use the gate on Giuffrias.
